Before my first trip to Scotland, I bought a wonderful book by Magnus Magnusson, "Scotland: The Story of a Nation." It's available on several websites including amazon.com. I can highly recommend it as a thorough resource into the nation's origins, ethnic and political heritage and up through recent history. To get a sense of the current politics, I'd recommend an online subscription to one of the local newspapers like the Glasgow Daily Times or the Herald Scotland.

Best of luck!
