Where to go

I am a one of four middle aged men from the south of Ireland who recently came up with the fantastic idea of adopting some sports team in order that we can use our blind allegiance to escape to scotland at least once a year to support our new found cause. Early December is the preferred travelling time. Granted this plan was formulated under a heavy haze of heineken but the idea remains sound. The sport and the destination have however a few basic requirements. We would preferably like a relatively rural setting within a reaonable distance to Edinburgh in order to facilitate easy access. A friendly environment that can ably supply refreshments of the alcohol type would be deemed essential. With regards the team sport we are willing to concede some ground here and depending on the settings we would consider watching any event even the television if necessary. So basically the plan is we need an excuse to get away from our respective families at least once a year under guise of our loyal intercultural sports study. A suitable destination is all that remains.

Advice help and knowledge

I am running out of time to try and organise our trip. Someone must have some suggestions as to an appropriate destination. If someone seeking similar advice to the Munster region I would have a hundred recommendations. Cmon people help a scottish novice out. No tourist trap just a genuine relatively lively rural town where we can disappear for a few days.

Alcalde, how about the Shinty? great rivals Newtonmore & Kingussie, only a few miles apart in Badenoch, not exactly near Edinburgh but stations in both connecting to Edinburgh/Stirling/Glasgow and plenty of hotels & pubs. Akin to your own game, loads of casualties. Ski-ing available at nearby Aviemore if the snow comes early. Check Shinty fixtures on-line. wullie m
A warm Highland welcome in Kingussie

That sounds like a plan. As we come from a hurling stronghold in munster that could turn out to be the perfect suggestion. Cheers

Thing to watch with the trains is that they all stop at Kingussie, they don't all stop at Newtonmore any longer. wullie m
