G'Day

Can anyone tell me whatever happened to
the singer Lena Martell who used to sing
in the Barrowland in the 60's? She later
became a very popular world wide singer.
I still have one of her C.D's I just
wondered if she was still on the go?
Anyone have information on her?

I'm sorry, I don't know the singer you are talking about. I just wanted to ask you, was the Barrowland still open in the 60's? I was quite surprised when I read your post, I was under the impression that they closed the Barrowland in the 50's. Maybe I am wrong. I used to go there when I got fedup with the Locarno. I wonder if the Locarno is still going?

I occasionally went to Barrowland in the 60's
whenLena Martell sang with Billy McGregor's
Band.She sang at other venues too I think, then
she became pretty famous.I still have one of her
C.D's I think she will be in her 50's now.
I heard that Barrowland had reopened in the 60's
after being burnt down in the 50's before I went
to dancing.
Are there any dance halls left now in Glasgow?

Sorry, I don't know. I live in Florida. I wonder if the Barrowland and the Locarno are still open? I also wonder if they still do the things we used to do when we went to the dancing - like, all the girls standing around together and all the fellas giving us the "eye". Oh my, my age is showing again!

Who cares about age? I think we are all as young
as we feel. I have heard from reliable sources that
Locarno has shut down but the Barrowland is still
on the go. I wonder if their patrons are all 'old
timers' like us? Do you remember the 'twist' or am I
really showing my age here? I think it was fabulous
and really original.

Another one of my haunts was The Flamingo (Cardonald Area)
and I have some good memories there.

Like you, I have been away from Scotland for some years
now 16 years . but still feel nostalgic at times. Good to
have someone to talk to about old times.

Where did you come from in Glasgow?

The Barrowland is still open, but it's probably nothing like what it was in the days when you girls used to go. They have pop concerts in there now... always have a big show at Hogmanay.

And I think the Flamingo is a country and western place now! Was it at Paisley Road Toll?

Thanks for your reply and its interesting to know that
Barrowland is still on the go, even although different.
The Flamingo is past Paisley Road Roll, along the Paisley
Road towards Cardonald (Corner of Berryknowes Road to be
exact) I think. That was one of our favourite haunts in
the sixties. Those were the days!! So its a country
Western place now, well.

Still waiting for anyone to give me information about Lena
Martell a really good singer!! Any info???
