A few more suggestions:

Battlefield Band
Peatbog Faeries
Wolftones (not to be confused with Wolfs Tone, mind they're no bad either)
Phil Cunningham & Ally Bain

Cape Breton (Canada) produces some crackin' musicians as well so see if you can track down any performers from there.

Drummy, can it be true? Another fan of the mighty, facial haired innovators of Irish traditional/rebel music the Wolftones? Wow, I must be in heaven. Joe McDonnell is a true classic.

bob,
I'm really quite catholic (non religious sense) in my musical tastes. Trouble is I can never remember the names of the bands I've seen and like! Since my wife is Irish, I've spent more time than is good for an 'auld yin's' health in sessions into the early hours in pubs. Mind you I rely on my brother to keep me up to scratch on the latest 'folk' developments. As periodic, self-employed wood carver he seems to have more time than me. Listening to Travelling Folk on BBC Scotland does help though!

Always good to find a fellow traveller.

Ellen, don't feel tooooo bad about liking "hokey" music.... i myself have a soft spot for Calum Kennedy's music, although my ex-father in law did some arrangements on one of his albums and said he is (was? i think he's deid) an utter b*stard.
