Personally, I think they are a pretty pretentious group of people...

Here's the list of the supposed Top 50 in Scotland...

Funny, even I would have thought Franz F would have been higher - they seem to be everywhere these days.

Well, I think this thread would do well filed under Music & Art, so Ill move it over there, (computer gremlins permitting).

Yes it could be true. As with Scottish Composers, Scottish groups hardly provide the nation with an embarrassment of riches, though there are plenty of embarrassments (Wet Wet Wet, The Bay City Rollers, Texas, Deacon Blue, The Proclaimers, Lulu, Del Amitri, Ultravox; the list is long and way well include Franz Ferdinand one day).

I don't object to tweeness per se, but that lot (Bel & Seb) can be just a little bit to twee sometimes.

A usually overlooked band is The Pastels, whom I see do get listed at number 37, and I might make them my best ever Scottish band. They are certainly the spiritual forefathers of Belle & Seb.

Scotland's best groups do tend to be ones which lack mass market appeal, but have very strong cult followings.

Thumbs up

Belle & Sebastian are my husband's favourite band, so he was quite happy (but shocked!) about them being No. 1.

My all-time favourite band are the Trash Can Sinatras, at Number 22. I personally think they should have been much higher on the list.
