Speaking of Caetano Veloso the Brazilian musician/composer
I do have many of his CD's one of my very FAVORITES, is this one (it is a compilation) of really BEAUTIFUL Latin American standard favorites, reinterpreted with a Brazilian sensuality and affection that is ABSOLUTELY charming:
![]() I will also look for a picture of Chano Pozo, and of Silvio Rodriguez, and Anacaona if I can and post it on here. This is Chano Pozo, he was a great Cuban composer and dancer and musician. But had quite a 'controversial' private life. Look: ![]() Here is Silvio Rodriguez the Cuban composer of many, many fine songs. He was one of the leaders of the Nueva Trova Cubana music that started in the early 70's and continued for more than twenty years and has new members up to the present day: ![]() Here is Anacaona (the picture is very small but they are all females and sisters and have Chinese Cuban ancestry: Here is a lovely artwork about BOMBA y Plena which are the traditional rythyms of Puerto Rico my home island: ![]() This is making me think of when I danced on the weekends....I will be back to talk about some Music history and details, but I got inspired too. And I just played an old favorite of my father's. Mambo number five by Perez Prado. GOT TO GO AND DANCE IT. ![]() ![]() You know all this music I am thinking about makes me nostalgic, I hope more people get interested in talking about it. I wish people also would let me know about Scottish music in Scotland today. I think if you speak more than a few languages and open up your ears to many types and styles of music it is the greatest trip around the world without having to leave your home!! ![]() [Edited by PRgirl on 30th April 2005 at 02:35]

Very interesting thread!
I had to do a little research into Cuban music for a college project. Most of it was listening and composition, but I learned some of the history of the genre from a book called The Rough Guide to Cuban Music. My favourite artists are Maraca, Roberto Carcasses and Marlon Simon. I do not know how well known these artists are. I am familiar with the dizzy Gillespie number Mantica. In fact I used to play that in a band! |

I bet you bought Buena Vista Social Club's grammy award winning CD? Did you? Here is the CD (PLEASE LISTEN TO IT SINEWAVE it is really really good!!) ![]() Here are some of the Buena Vista Social Club members of the band and vocalists too! The two men are deceased. And they sure had fun in their last years. The first one is Ibrahim Ferrer (he also appears walking on the above BVSC CD cover), and next to Omara Portuondo is Ruben Gonzalez the pianist, who played piano with all the ALL TIME greats, Machito, Arsenio Rodriguez, Maria Teresa Vera etc. etc.. Also deceased. Omara is still alive and was the daughter of a Cuban baseball great, and his wife who also sang. Cuties all of them!! ![]() You should hear Ruben Gonzalez' version of Rafael Hernandez' 'Cumbanchero' and his version of 'Chanchullo'. It is really fun to listen to. These musicians die with enthusiasm for music. And live for it. I also enjoy this woman vocalist and composer also from Cuba , but now lives in Florida, her name is Albita Rodriguez: ![]() She has a really great band. And fine lyrics. She is very talented. Very talented indeed. [Edited by PRgirl on 3rd May 2005 at 05:16]

I love that CD of Buena Vista Social Club they have a cut on there with Ibrahim singing "Dos Gardenias" I humm it sometimes on my way to work in the morning. Dos Gardenias para ti, que me pueden decir? Te quiero, te adoro, MI VIDA.... Son mi unica ilusion... Music soothes the soul.
