your first pipes

Hey I'm also sixteen, this is my 9th year playen the pipes and I needed a new set so my teacher (Alasdair Gillies) highly recommended the MacCallum ABO3, (which I got) and they are with out a doubt the best pipe for their cost. Even he bought one for himself, I think the price went from $1300 uds (last june) to around $2000 usd...on the bright side you dont have to pay any internation shipping fee. Good luck

Smart, thanks.

Thanks for your post....i thought this thread was dying...!

Well, I am getting my first set of pipes on thursday - they are only band pipes just now but that'll do until I can afford my own set of pipes - which will probably be in the next few years (I am totally skint just now....! ). Until then, i need to find out as much as I can about different kinds of pipes/prices etc so your post has been very useful - thank you.

Nine ears on the pipes, eh? Well, by the time I am nine years on the pipes I will be......lets see......almost 27. You're way ahead of me!

I suppose I'd better be goin now - i've got art homework to finish.

Thanks again ,

Sharon

Wink hello :)

they're going very well, thanks

yeah, i'm getting on fine with them. i absolutely love it!!! i'm now playing them along with the band which is great fun (weird - i never thought i'd ever be doing that so soon!) its a pity i couldn't have done it sooner.

i've still got to learn a lot about them and all that, but i'm getting along fine and my tutors are both very good.

at the moment, unfortunately, i am not able to practise as much as i would like to, as i have my exams coming soon and i gotta revise . (last week i went into practise and my pipes were "burping" cos the blowpipe valve had dried up or something because i never got a chance to practise during that week with all my homework etc. it was dead embarrassing. my tutor wouldn't stop laughing..)

so how are you getting on??

thanks again for your interest, by the way.

see ya later,
sharon x

Ah blowpipe valve trouble that’s happened to me a few times lol talk about embarrassing. The worst thing is when play a parade or gig and when your done, you forget to unzip your bag and you don’t take the chanter out to put it in the cap and when you go to practice you have a soft moldy reed that squeaks and growls that’s also embarrassing unless you have a reed to change before band practice.

I’ve been pretty good. My teacher let me march with his band (the 78th Fraser Highlanders) on St. Patrick’s Day that was incredible but other then that I haven’t done anything major with the pipes other then play some gigs and learn my competition music for the season hopefully it will go well. The band stuff isn’t too hard this year Cant wait until we get to do some competitions in Scotland this summer and hopefully August.

Bho'n scolair beag ---whats that mean ?

Keep it up and you’ll be winning competitions in now time !

I remember the day I first played with the band. I learned in a boy's brigade pipe band. I was so proud of myself for getting into the playing band.

the first ever competition I playing was in the Caird hall in Dundee. The most embarrasing thing to date that happened to me was that my bass drone came flying out of the bag.. all the judges said was piper had some difficulty. Bloody right I did. lol

anyway, keep up the work!
