Personally I have no great fondness for folk music, all those beards and knitted sweaters don't appeal to me. But I do like a Guitarist/Singer called Bert Jansch who has been around since the 1960's, and is still pottering about today. He is much feted by rock musicians (like Jimmy Page and Johhny Marr), but whether this affects his 'folk' credentials I don't know.
He is from Edinburgh (or is it Leith?), and the old bugger even has his own website: http://www.bertjansch.com Any of his early records I would recommend. Not sure to what extent he is actually a 'folk musician', he works in a variety of styles. His work can be not unlike the French impressionist composers of the early 20th century, as well as being sometimes medieval in style. He is very much a product of 1960's eclecticism rather than someone who works in a particular tradition. http://www.stoneyport.demon.co.uk/bio/janschbio.html |

I love the Corries, but haven't had the pleasure of seeing them live yet! Also I have a hard time finding their Cds. It's alsways the same.

Here's a vote for Dick Gaughan http://www.dickalba.demon.co.uk/
Hmm - I suddenly wonder if there is a bit of a Leith conspiracy. No complaints though - a place could do worse than export folk singers and ginger wine. ![]() (Re. Watt Nicol, was he the one who gave up performing, or, rather, moved in a different direction of performing, and for the last while has been going around being a sort of "motivational" speechifier?) One known for achievements other than performing, but who really has to be mentioned, of course, is the late Hamish Henderson {Monco - I don't think Sheena Wellington for instance, has a beard.) ![]() Oops - Taliesin, sorry, but you are not likely to get to see the Corrieslive, cos Roy Williamson is, you might say, of the dead persuasion. ![]() |
