One who might not be so well-known outside Scotland is the Dundee singer/songwriter Michael Marra
http://www.baillie.net/ics/marra/main/mm_history.htm I quite like his idea for a new national anthem, "Written as an alternative national anthem for Scotland, because all the others are too military for my liking. " Hermless (Michael Marra) Hermless, hermless There's never nae bother frae me Ah go tae the library an' tak' oot a book Then Ah come hame for ma tea Wi' ma hand on ma heart and ma heart in ma mooth With arms that could reach o'er the sea Ma feet might be big but the insects are safe They'll never get stood on by me Hermless, hermless There's never nae bother frae me Ah go tae the library an' tak' oot a book Then Ah come hame for ma tea Ah save a' the coupons that comes wi' the soup And when Ah have saved fifty-three Ah put three in the drawer and send fifty away And something gets posted tae me Hermless, hermless There's never nae bother frae me Ah go tae the library an' tak' oot a book Then Ah come hame for ma tea There's one or twa pals that Ah ca' my chums They're canny and meek as can be There's Tam wi' his car, Big Ed wi' his stamps And Big Lexie Gilmour and me Hermless, hermless There's never nae bother frae me I go tae the library an' tak' oot a book Then I come hame for ma tea Hermless, hermless, There's never nae bother frae me Naeb'dy would notice if I wasnae there And I didnae come hame for ma tea Hermless, hermless There's never nae bother frae me I dae what I'm telt and I tidy my room Then I come doon for ma tea Hermless, hermless There's never nae bother frae me I jist hang aboot and inherit the earth Then I come doon for ma tea (as sung by Danny Kyle) http://mysongbook.de/msb/songs/h/hermless.html |

That is a beautiful song! It would really be a good national anthem! I have heared the song 'Caledonia' and 'Flower of Scotland' called such.

Favourite folk singers? Well, there's Jean Redpath, and there is Heather Heywood. Alastair McDonald, Robin Laing, Ishbel MacAskill. There's a wonderful album of Robert Burns songs by Andy M. Stewart (NOT Andy Stewart!!!), too. Dad likes Lena Martell a lot. Noel Mc Loughlin is good, too.

Hey, poor Hamish Imlach http://www.dickalba.demon.co.uk/chain/hamish_i.html hasn't had a mention yet. (Yes, I do seem to be picking on the old-timers, or deceased timers, but, no, I don't know why either).
His autobiography "Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice" was a great read and very funny. Not sure if it has ever been re-issued, though. And be warned, some bits of it, you just might not want to be reading anywhere near dinner time! ![]() <boring tale> (My friend and sister-in-law visited me, with her dad's copy of the book, and she let me borrow it, with promises to take care of it. Aha - but then... other friend came visiting, and against all normal practice and politeness, I agreed to let her take it with her back to London to read on train, taking good care etc, not letting it leave her at all. Well, then, somehow, the book just *had* to go to visit one or two other people..... It got a bit of a "lived-in" look. A while later, this travelling book did get as far on its journey home as Glasgow, at a time when Hamish was doing a gig. Hmm, thought Celyn and friend who'd now brought it back from London, it is just possible, the righteous wrath of real owner might be assuaged if we get Hamish Imlach to sign book. He did, as in "To xxx - you and your bloody family and friends are keeping me poor by sharing ONE BLOODY BOOK!" (I hope the book, no doubt exhausted by its travelling, did eventually get home to Montrose.) </boring tale> Very sad to die at only 55, but I admit to the cynical thought that to do so "in the early hours of New Year's Day, with a glass of whisky in one hand and a herbal cigarette in the other" does have a certain style about it. (That is how I remember first hearing/reading in whatever news source - but I cannot claim to be 100% sure I recall it completely vertabim - I mean - it was Ne'erday, after all.) ![]() |

Talisien, I wonder if you have a store called 2001 where you live, they had this album. If you don't find it, I will try to get you a copy, okay?
