Alastair McDonald
This comment is posted a few years late. (!) :-) But folks interested in finding up-to-date & comprehensive info on Alastair McDonald's work & his 50yrs-plus music/entertainment career are best advised to go straight to Alastair's own CORBAN RECORDINGS website (Corban Recordings) and to his Corban Recordings ebay shop. I've also gathered a selection of clips of Alastair's work in my Williebyron youtube channel, for those interested.
(ENJOY!)

Hi Willie.

I've been meaning to listen to Al Mac's Robert Burns songs.

What other folk music do you know?

I can suggest some records/groups.

Hi Indy! Strongly urge you to take the plunge & buy a copy of Alastair McDonald's "Honest Poverty" aka "A Degree of Burns" album - available through Alastair's own Corban Recordings ebay shop. 'Tis a contemporary classic, imo. Exquisite guitar work & arrangements, in understated "folk" style ... and Al McD's voice & all-round delivery of the songs is top class in it, to boot. A best kept secret GEM of a production. As to my musical interests, well I love all good music, most genres. Amongst other things, have been following "folk" music since the mid 60s; also currently sing in a "world music" community choir. Though I've kept my Williebyron youtube channel strictly as a tribute to Alastair McDonald's work.
Best for your Al McD Burns discoveries!! :-)

I'd sure like to listen to them before buying but am having no luck there.

Are you familiar with these groups?

:

Planxty
Five Hand Reel
Paul Mounsey
Catherine Anne Mcphee
Ossian

Probably not as familiar as I SHOULD be! :-) Am probably more familiar with Luka Bloom (have seen him perform a couple of times down here; and own a couple of his albums), than his brother - though of course I know of Christy Moore by legendary reputation. Saw the late Alistair Hulett performing at a folk club down here as well. And have some early Greentrax recordings of different artists who are possibly not so well known outside Scotland. Shared an overnight North Sea ferry with Runrig once, back in the late 80s, ex Denmark where I was living at the time ... does that count?! ;-)
Good luck with your Alastair McDonald music deliberations.
A' the best
