Thought I'd introduce a little art since this is a Music AND Art forum.

You may have heard in the news that three paintings totalling around £1 million in value, were stolen from the Whitworth gallery in Manchester, as a protest against the gallery's lax efforts towards security. The paintings (one by Van Gogh, one by Picasso and one by Gauguin) were later found outside a public toilet.
Anyway, this inspired the management to temporarily close the gallery, so although the thieves did highlight a point that needed highlighting, they have potentially robbed some of you of the opportunity to see the Lee Miller exhibition presently on display there.

If the Whitworth does re-open it's doors to the public sooner rather than later, and the Miller exhibition is still there (due to move very soon but I don't know where to), then I recommend you go.

Lee Miller was a member of the surrealist movement, who counted, Picasso amongst her friends. She was also a war correspondant/reporter during WWII, and took some amazing photographs of the liberation of the concentration camps, post war German POW's, and life in the trenches. She was also a very attractive woman and did an awful lot of modelling. She even once appeared on the cover of Vogue I believe.
I was disappointed that there was so little of her surrealist work in the exhibition, but it is still very interesting. It takes you through Miller's life as much as through her work.

Comes with high recommendation from me.

I don't have a good excuse to be in Manchester soon but is that a travelling exhibition? If so, i'll look out for it.

I like the surrealists - I was in Brussels art gallery recently and stopped in front of a Magritte piece (can't remember the title) - stood in front of it, mesmerised, for about 15 minutes.

ron.

BTW - there's a David Mach show doing the rounds - if it makes it down your way - have a look. Highly entertaining!

SharpKid,
you´re right, there should definitely be more art on this forum. May it also be that you two are looking for another interesting forum to stay

I have to admit that I´ve never heard of Lee Miller but I´ll look for some of her works.

I love Magritte. Ron, what was the painting about? I might be able to give you the title of it..
BTW, good to see that you´re still around..

Anneli

Ron, I don't know whether it is travelling or not. I just know that the exhibition is advertised as ending early May at the Whitworth.

Anneli, Im sticking around. Don't you worry. As moody as I sound sometimes, I do like the banter, and there's no better way to make a name for yourself than by getting in the locals faces as soon as you turn up.

"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"

Well, I don´t think that´s banter anymore but anyway, I´m glad that you two are still here.

I was wondering the same thing, why there isn't many people discussing art. I am an artist myself I don't have my name out there just yet, but that doesn't matter. It is one thing to steal a painting but then to just prop them up out side a toilet they might as well spit on them. Like they were nothing, that really takes the cake.

The theft from the Whitworth museum is nothing compared to the theft and vandalism of nearly the entire contents of the museum in Bagdad recently. 6000 years of art gone or destroyed. Have you seen the pictures? Even the earthquake in Italy did not destroy so much art.

I'm very angry at the Americans for letting this happ... oooops!... I am one.

Thank you Sharp Kid for bringing up an art topic. I tried to engage some discussions when i first came to this site but didn't get responses. I think we can get it going now, though.

I am also an artist... painting/drawing/photography/mail art. And i know Desert-Rose, Leaky Spider, and others here are artists. Perhaps we can start a thread where we post our art.
