I dug out "The Sound of Speed" by the Jesus and Mary Chain yesterday. I'd forgotten how great an album it is.
Anyway, onto the topic, there is a fantastic cover of "My Girl" on there which I absolutely adore. Possibly even more than the original, down to it's contrasting style. The original was big, loads of strings, four part harmonies, the works. The Jesus and Mary Chain version is just bass, one guitar and a couple of vocal tracks with tons of reverb. It's so minimalist and leaves so much more to the imagination. It almost takes you into some poor love struck fellas head where he's working out the tune. I love it. Anyone got a favourite cover that they think has done justice to the original or even bettered it in some way? |

Cheers, ron. Did you hear the 'I'm sticking with you...' background to a recent Hyundai ad? First done by Velvet Underground in 1976. Also, 'Alberta' covered by Eric Clapton - arguably better than the Leadbelly original. Also 'CC Rider' (covered by many people) and 'Rock Island Line' (covered by Lonnie Donegan) |
