The Final Cut
Sorry that this has nothing to do with Scotland, but I’m curious to get your views. I’ve just watched a film The Final Cut on TV, starring Robin Williams, set a little in the future (presumably) where a company called EYE offers brain computer recording implants to customers (especially parents to be) which will record the implantee’s life from day one until death,24/7 x 52 year after year, through the implantee’s eyes.
On the implantee’s death, the company will retrieve the data and after editing and splicing a lifetime of key moments from the deceased’s life, prepare a representative filmatic remembrance of the person’s life which will make them on forever for their family. Of course, you don’t usually get to see much of the deceased, as you see life through that person’s eyes, unless they spend a lot of time in front of the mirror.
One scene showed a baby being born (seen through the baby’s eyes) so you see the medical staff, the proud parents etc. In the film you can clearly hear every word the people are saying.
My questions are, 1) As a newly-born baby, would this happen ? Is the implant purely a recorder which records the adults’ words or does it interact with the implantee’s brain/mind and understanding of the world around, in which case the baby surely wouldn’t understand and store cohesive speech which would need to be learned ?
2) Do I need to get out more ?
