![]() I wonder if anyone actually reads any books set in Scotland that were actually written by Scottish authors instead of the mindless drivel that many of the American authors tend to spew out!

oneofthefew -actually woulnd't call it mindless dribble
Although she is not a scotish author, she does much research for her books, she lists all her sources at the back of every book.If you have not read any of her books then maybe it would do well to take the time to read one before you comment. If you have read her books and still find mindless, then that is your opinion and we are all intitled to one.If you would like to give a small list of scotish authors that are a good read please do i would be happy to check them out.

Serena, it really depends on what you are looking for in a book. In my humble opinion Iain Banks is really good. James Kelman is someone that people rave about, but I haven't been impressed with him - similarly with Irvine Welsh! Janice Galloway is not an author I am familiar with, but she's won a few prizes. Muriel Spark is another that's worth checking - based on what little I've read from her that is!
Going back a bit in time, Neil Munro produced a few good historical novels; he also wrote the Para Handy tales! Beyond that you have Scott and Stevenson - and plenty more to choose from! As for my opinion of Karen Marie Moning, as you probably guessed I have never read anything she has written. I based what I said on your introduction to her work and the "formula approach" - especially the old time highland warriors - she seems to take to writing a book set in Scotland! Chances are her "vision" of Scotland NEVER existed, no matter how romantically people like to think about the Highlands or years gone by! However, from the brief list of Scottish authors I have mentioned above there really is no need for me to even look for KMM's books!

I did TRY.... honestly - just like with Gabaldon. KMM was recommended to me - I picked up one of her books in a localbookshop. Read the blurb at the front... flicked a few pages. Believe me, Serena... it was not the sort of book that many Scotswomen would find interesting!
But then again, I'm not one for bodice rippers or 'back in time' romances, so maybe I'm just the wrong person to give an opinion that you'd be happy to hear?

Don't like them, don't read them, they can't compete with the likes of Burns or Scott anyway.
We had a short discussion here one time about 'Corelli's Mandolin'. I finally got it read, VERY good story. I am not too clear about the political side of some of the characters, the Greek underground and resistance groups (I may need to do a little research to understand them better) but it didn't spoil the story for me. Book, MUCH better than the movie! |
