Harry Potter

I can't believe I went back as far as 5 pages and didn't see a thread titled "Harry Potter".. that's not to say that its not been discussed here.. I just got tired of looking.. lol..

In any event, I have compelted all 6 books within the last 2 months. I am terribly upset at the ending of book six.. even moreso since I've not had anyone to Gab about it with.. LOL.. I was THROWN! lol.. just canni belive it..

Anyway.. I don't want to give it away, would rather not spoil it for anyone whom plans on reading it, but hasn't yet.. but.. I can't wait to see what book 7 is all about.. its stressing me out.. lol.. Has JK not finished it yet hurrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyy! lol..

Looking forward to the Movie in November too..

Any Potter fans about?

Hi Pabby-

There's a bunch of Potter fans on here (me included). We talked about the books in the "what are you reading" thread for a little bit.

I completely agree about the 6th book. I knew it was coming, but I just didn't want to truly believe. I understand the need for it and I think I know why it happened, but it still made me sad.

I can't wait for the 7th book. We probably won't see it until 2007 or later though.. JK seems to like to take her time. She said the 7th book would be shorter than the last two books too which boggles my mind because there's so much to conclude and so many little storylines to wrap up. Plus since it's the last book I was hoping she'd make it nice and long like the 5th book.

I am really curious to see Goblet of Fire on the big screen. I'm curious to know how they managed to cut it down to 2 hours and 15 minutes. Hopefully it's better than the 3rd movie. I know alot of people liked that movie the best, but I just couldn't enjoy it as much. Too much changing of the script and it wasn't that they just left stuff out, but that they changed things that really didn't need to be changed. But that's my opinion and I know not everyone will agree with me.

urgg.. I just lost a long'ish post (reply)

I might then have even joined into the discussion, but I don't remember and since I just finished the books last week, I have to admit I stayed away from talks and stuff, cause I didnt want it ruined myself

I was shocked. I knew that Snape was up to something, but even for the longest time, while I was praying for Fawkes, I thought maybe it was a "make believe" jinx. I seriously didn't think he was going to do that at all..

What's your take, or your suspicions, on why that had to happen?

I think also that book 7 should be about the size of book 5 & 6 together. lol.. I never would have went near a book so large, but half way thru them, I used to get annoyed cause it was almost over.. lol..

I didnt like the third movie that much at all. I couldnt believe how they rushed it, changed things, and left sooooo much out. It was truly annoying. I mean, LOTR is over three hours, so was titantic and other movies, so I dont see the problem, even more so that these movies rake in millions..

Also, something thats been really niggling at me here.. is about book #1, "Harry Potter and The Sorcere's Stone" ... the book is titled that so was the movie, etc.. so why on the inside cover of all the remaining books, 2 thru 6, do they list the book as "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" It's called that in other places too, on websites, it might even, if I'm not mistaken, be referred to it that way in the books themsleves. I dont understand.. do you know why?

They changed the title because the US book publishers didn't think that American book readers knew what was meant by Philosopher's stone so they changed it to Sorcerer. They also had Americanized some of the more british phrases and slang, but after complaints by the readers they decided to leave the slang as written in the latter books.

I still don't know what to make of Snape. I can't help but think there's something more to him than meets the eye. Was his action something he and Dumbledore planned ahead of time? I wonder because when Harry went after him while he was spiriting Draco away, it was almost like Snape was still trying to teach him about Occulmency. Telling Harry he needs to control him thoughts and emotions. Something that could come in handy when facing Voldemort again.

As for Dumbledore.. I knew it was going to happen because I always thought that would be the one thing that would push Harry to go after Voldemort. It was the final catalyst. He lost another parental figure and the one who meant the most to him. Dumbledore always listened and believed Harry no matter how crazy the story seemed.

I remember quite a long 'conversation' re Harry Potter, but it was a long time ago!

I used to see JKR sitting scribbling at a table in the bistro that was owned by her brother in law - it was called Nicholson's on Nicholson Street.

I haven't been round that way for ages, but someone told me it was now a Chinese restaurant!

And it is true that the Philospher's Stone part of the title was changed for an American readership. Why, I have no idea - I would think that if anyone didn't know what it meant, they'd just look it up!

I was reading an article where they were interviewing the man responsible for translating Harry Potter into French. Apparently the latest book is 120 pages longer than the English version. Apparently when translating they decide to take a decision to translate the sense of the words.

The Translator said that English was in this sense a better language as it was more concise and coveyed several concepts in a few words! For example the word 'wand' was translated as 'baguette magique'. There are several instances of two or three word phrases turning into six plus word phrases when translated!
