Hi there,
I don't know if anyone has mentioned him yet but to my mind the 'Best Scottish Actor' or certainly my favourite is Alistair Sim, an incredible talent. You just have to see his portrayal as Scrooge in the 1950 film that is now seen as the definitive version of the character, also films such as Green for Danger, An Inspector Calls and his comic turn as a headmistress in the Belles of St Trinians, all wonderful films to name but a few. Current Scottish actors such Brian Cox (original and best Hannibal Lector) and Robert Carlyle are hard to beat for versatility. Also Dougie Henshall is making a name for himself as is Joseph McFadden (The Crow Road is a stunning piece of television), and don't forget Ken Stott's and Katie Murphy's performances in Takin' over the Asylum and the cast such as Robbie Coltrane, Maurice Roeves, Richard Wilson et all in Tutti Frutti. Scotland has an abundance of wonderful acting talent it is a shame that our television and film industry ouput is so tiny and can't capitalise on it. You just have to watch My Name is Joe or Sweet Sixteen to see how a small budget movie can be enriched by this talent. ![]() By the way does anyone remember a TV movie made by BBC Scotland set around 1987 in Dunoon at the former American naval base there, It was called, I think, Where The Buffalo Roam. Starring Harvey Keitel as an American serviceman who marries a local Scots girl and she yearns for him to take her back to America where she naively dreams of excitement and glamour, but he wants to stay in Scotland. ![]()

Maurice Roëves
Maurice Roëves was excellent as the "reptilian" lead guitarist Vincent Diver in the classic rock comedy drama, "Tutti Frutti." (see other thread)'
The Pink & Blue jerkin he had to wear because girlfriend Glenna had knitted it, though the sleeves hung down to his knees! "The Iron Man of Scottish Rock, that's whit they cra' me!" he later moaned, fighting his sober tears, on remembering Glenna was dead. Maurice as also played a disgraced ex-cop and father to a major character in the BBC soap "Eastenders," a dying lothario in the hospital drama "Casualty," and God in Irving Welsh's "The Acid House." And playing a Romulan Captain briefly in "Star Trek; The Next Generation" must have been immensely satisfying! [Edited by Elsonico on 2nd September 2004 at 23:00] |

If you look at the foot of the previous page you will see that I have also stated that Alistair Sim is the top of the pile as far as Scottish actors go. Probably too ugly for the Billy Boyd fanatics though. I'm glad that you mentioned, "My Name is Joe", as Peter Mullan was a sad ommision from my own list. Consider my wrist slapped. |
