A great read for all fans of high fantasy., December 23, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from England
Once again David Eddings writes an excelent story of good Vs evil love and hate. The book follows the same theme as all Eddings novels but this is not a bad thing as it is well written with great characters and enough plot twists to keep you interested. All fans of his previous works will love the story and its a single novel (which seams to be going out of fashion these days),so no waitting for years to read the whole story.A great book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Rehashed characters in a vaguely enjoyable story, February 21, 2002
Reviewer: A reader from London
Having read all of David Eddings work, I expected certain things from this book--the quest, the odd group of companions, the romance and the interesting side characters. While the book did deliver on all these fronts, it seemed as if the characters were all rehashed from previous books--Althalus himself was Belgarath crossed with Silk, the Arya was Ce'Nedra, Gher was an irritating version of Errand and on and on. Again, perhaps because I am used to his more voluminous works I found that Mr Eddings had to skip on characterisation simply to fit his plot into one volume (perhaps 2 or three would have suited the depth of plot more) while Gher became an irritating way to move the plot forward rather than a character in his own right...I doubt whether I will read it again and again and again the way I can the Belgariad or the Mallorean.
Didn't enjoy it., May 26, 2005

I don't know but the book was big and annoying. I think it was written for kids. Somehow the book come across like a Jeffrey Archer novel. Simple plot, simple writing, simple characters - completely one dimensional with no depth. I find it funny in parts but it didn't really engaged my mind.
Great Fantasy, January 8, 2004

I have heard some good, and bad reviews for David Eddings, so I decided that the best thing to do would be to go out and buy one myself. This happened to be the one I came accross, so I bought it without hesitation and read through it. Being only 13, it took me just over a week to read, as school was in the way, and I would rate this as a very good read. It is easy to get into and the whole plot seems to have this grip on you to not allow you to put the book down. Althalus, Leitha and Gher were my favourite characters as they each seemed to appeal to me the most. I believe that with the vast number of main characters, people will always find someone whom they can relate to, younger readers like myself will relate to Althalus as he is the main character, and maybe Eliar and Gher as they are younger. Whereas the older and wiser may like Dweia or Bheid. The Eddings' have truly made a wonderous story and have made characters I am not likely to forget. I will certainly continue to read books by David Eddings as I enjoyed this one so much. I am sorry that I cannot put an opinion across as to whether or not this book is too similar to other David Edding's books because this is the first I have read. I recommend this stand-alone fantasy to any competive readers, teen or adult. And I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
