I have seen both movies and read the book. I am almost finished the book again. I got the book for my 7th birthday, which was 22 years ago. I saw the movie and then picked up the book again.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the first movie and it was based on the book, but it was not true to the story.

Charlie and the chocolate factory is the book turned into a movie, with a few differences.

I thought both were good but, I have to say, I favor the Gene Wilder one because the songs are better.

Even although I am a huge Depp fan I would agree though not because of the songs, just because it was the first. I know it pissed off the purists but as a kid it was spectacular. I can only hope that the kids of today get similar things from it what we did a couple of decades ago.

You are right, as a kid seeing a room that was made entirely of edible candy was great. It was magical! I, too do hope that today's chuildren love the movies as we did the first one.
