"The Historian" - Da Vinci Code meets Dracula?

Has anyone read "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova?

It's gotten some great reviews, and I got it from the library - it's about 600 pages through and I'm about half done and finding it slow going. I'm just wondering if it picks up and is worth finishing.

I've heard several reviewers call it the "it" book of the summer and "the Da Vinci Code meets Dracula" but I'm not seeing it!

For those of you who haven't heard of the book - it's about a young woman in the 70s (I think) who finds some letters in her fathers study that begin "to my poor unfortunate successor...." and as she reads the letters she begins to think that Dracula really does exists and she follows clues in the letters to find out the truth.

Sounds like it SHOULD be promising! Unfortunately I think a really good literary agent can pump up a book to get folks to buy it regardless of the quality!

I think that must have happened to 'The Name Of The Rose', I tried to read it as it was supposed to be sooooo good but what a YAWN!

You may have to be our sole critic and let us know if it's worth it!

just wanted to say, that this book is due back to the library and i'm probably not going to finish that - or i may just read the last 50 pages to see how it ends.

the story is a good idea - just too many mind numbingly dull details. i don't have the patience for it.

if anyone else attempts this book email me and let me know how it ends!

I've been trying to read this book. I have a hold placed on the book at the library but there's 30 holds in front of me so I have a rather long wait. I'll let you know what I think if I every get my chance to read the book.
