Oh. Here I am. I have nothing really useful to say, but I wanted to tell you that I love Byron. He is a great poet.

Byron's mother was Scottish and his father was an English wastrel. When the latter died,
B went to live in Scotland until he was 10, when he unexpectedly inherited an English title. He spoke Scots when he was young which he picked up from his nurse. Later on,
he was not very complimentary towards Scotland or the Scots. Like Robt. Burns he had many faults
and like him his name will live long after those of the "unco guid" who lie forgotten in their graves.
Hugh Macdiarmid said he was Scots, and that's
good enough for me!

Wink

Everyone-

Why is it that a lot of poets have some physical disability or some twisted childhood? Would the trauma of these events give the soon-to-be poet more of an inclination for poetry or is poetry just some genetic gift? What do you think?

(just a thought!)

Unhappy

Dear bajin-

I am not sure what all the fuss is about. Why is there a problem with talking about an 'anglophile' on Scotland.com? The purpose of this message board is to share knowledge and that shouldn't be restricted. To me, that is 'fascism'. Just because the subject matter of a question is of a foreign origin doesn't mean it should be excluded! That is ridiculous! The reason I first started this topic was to have a question of mine (relating to Lord Byron) answered. I knew there were people at Scotland.com who could answer my question so this seemed like a logical place to start. I am not trying to 'hijack' a scottish website! This is also ridiculous! My favorite country in the world is Scotland . Learning about Scotland opened my eyes to a whole new world of scholarship. Especially a world of poetry and history. So, obviously I wouldn't try to undermine a website dedicated to Scotland. I am simply in search of knowledge about one of my favorite poets. That is all.

Sincerely,

-Joshua-

Exclamation

When Byron died at Missilonghi, during the Truko-Greecian war in 1824, he had syphilis, gonerrhea and several other V.D.. There was also a rumour that he was the father of his half-sister's child, even though her husband adopted it.
