some headnotes
- (concerning the death of the poet, Shelley) The Don Juan was voyaging alone manned by Shelley, Williams, and a local youth. A storm is sweeping across the Bay of Spezia, and when it clears, the ship has disappeared.
Meanwhile the local fishing boats are making hasty retreat to the safety of the harbours. One of them crossed paths with the Don Juan then racing along under full sail. The men in the fishing boat yell out: either the Don Juan should run for the harbour, or if not, at least lower its sails. Williams seems to hesitate as if wanting to comply, but a voice that could only be Shelley's shouts 'No!' - Under full sail the Don Juan drives on into oblivion.
- Avoch - pronouned och like in loch - is a fishing village N. of Inverness on the Kessock Firth
- the shag is the pure black seabird called by 'scarfie' locally. It is a species of cormorant. They are powerful underwater swimmers when they go hunting fish.
