The Braveheart Nonsense
The film braveheart was historically wrong Wallace was a lowlander and scottish lowlanders did not wear kilts or have blue faces Rangers football club was not around at that time. At the battle of Stirling Bridge Wallace was joint leader of the Scottish Army together with Andrew Murray the forgotten man in scottish history. It is known that Andrew Murray led the highland army which cleared the highlands of all the occupation force before they met up with Wallace at Stirling to defend Scotland from the invaders. Murray was unfortunately badly wounded at stirling bridge but did live long enough to sign a declaration that the scottish ports were open again for business which he signed as joint guardian of Scotland together with William Wallace. The real braveheart was Robert the Bruce who defeated the english at bannockburn to secure Scotlands freedom. He was buried in a cloth of gold after his heart was removed from his body and placed in a silver casket which had a chain that was carried round the neck of his right hand man James Douglas known as the Black Douglas the greatest Knight in scottish history. If only hollywood could make films about real scottish history the true stories are even better than the fictional nonsense.

I'm adjoining my comments rather late I'm afraid but it is my favourite film and I have to ring that particular bell.
People whine and moan about it not being historically accurate. True, Robert the Bruce never betrayed Wallace; he was in fact the greater Scottish hero ultimately but so what really? The spirit of the times was captured and it's a movie that has given Scotland its 15 minutes of fame. It's a beautifully captured story of the reasons why people end up taking a side in any conflict. Didn't make me hate the English more, I don't hate anybody. It does give one a reason to love Scotland a bit more and encourages some to support Scottish independence; that can't be a bad thing. Freedom! |
