Arrow Basic Netiquette

Since Mr. McGonagall's social skills seem a tad undercooked and he appears to be new to both computers and the world of the internet, let me attempt to enlighten him just a bit concerning the rules of etiquette on a public BBS.

1) Posts such as your initial one are generally regarded as "flames"--posts in which someone is attacked. Depending on both the target of the flame and its creativity, flames can be acceptable and even prized for their wit or substance. They are, however, generally reserved for responses. When you begin a conversation by flaming, as you did--

Quote:
I simply titled the subject 'Poetica Philosophia' to defer any nonsense wanna-be poetry freeks....
I will to converse with anybody with a wit competent to debate poetry....
If anyone is interested in sharing and discussing true poetry, then respond. If not I doubt I have to tell you to keep walking. I must admonish you all ere you respond, if you call segregated prose, poetry, then do nto respond; I do nto want to waste my kindling on you. (emphasis added)
--you invite nothing but return flames, which is exactly what you got. As Silverlining put it so well:

Quote:
Yourself, I would be very interested in sharing and discussing poetry. However, I cannot embrace your talk e.g. 'true poetry' – what moves one does not necessarily move another - and I find that addressing people as "nonsense wanna be[s]" to be cold and extremely limited. This kind of view shuts the door on the face of anything new [without giving it a chance].
So, having started off with an attack, have you gotten a chance to discuss poetry here with anyone? No. Your one attempt (your 2nd post) got only the reply from J-J (a "troll", btw, is somebody who posts only flames and has no interest in real discussion; they live to be troublemakers and are never taken seriously) because you'd already offended him/her--as you apparently offended everyone else. This is a talent you seem proud of, but if you're not willing to allow for pov's other than your own, the conversation you're presumably looking for is never going to happen.

2) This sentence:

Quote:
This thread was addressed to ORON - if anyone else responds to it, I will ignore them.
First, this was not a "thread"--a thread comprises the entire topic; it was a "reply"--an individual post that is part of the thread.

Second, this is a public BBS--you don't get to decide who may or may not respond to something you post. If you want to talk to someone privately or individually, you email them using the feature this very complete BBS affords.

(BTW, the architecture of this board is one of if not the best I've seen on the net: navigation is easy and quick; little extras like the arrow that allows you to go to a single post rather than scrolling through a bunch of pages make a big difference, and I hope it never changes.)

I was going to email you privately, in fact, with this post, but then decided that since you were so public with yours, the answer should be public as well. Besides, you're not the only poster out there who could benefit from a little more knowledge of "netiquette".

To sum up, if you want to discuss poetry, then post in a way that invites discussion instead of all-out war. Otherwise, you'll get what you got here--which is a waste of everybody's time, including yours. If it's more important to you to be offensive, then by all means develop your natural qualities as a Grade A troll and expect to be ignored.

Apologetica

To refrain from extending my apologies, I believe, would limit my integrity only to that of a egoist and prideful fiend; I therefore, will to publicly adress not my errors, for Oron has doen a supreme job at construing them, but rather to publicly adress the fact that indeed errors were made. Though I was not, in my initial post(I geuss you would call it - instead of a thread), purport ot cause ruction over the net, for I seem to have enough of that ot deal with here off the net, but rather to voice an opinion, perhaps, too truculently. When I was bombarded with all the recriminations from other net viewers, I was vexed beyond complete reason because I had only proved to cause more trouble elsewhere. I suppose the feud from there was inaugerated. For this I apologize, and from here I will to open a new 'thread' entitled 'Poetical Debates'. Let us forsake the thread 'Poetica Philosophia' - which, I do nto rememebr who said it, is I think actually supposed to be Philosophia Poetica??? - and commence proper debating wihtin the thread 'Poetical Debates'.
I remain steadfast on my tenets concerning poetry, but perhaps we can argue all of our dogmas in a more civilized manner in teh other thread.
Once again, I apologize. And I do wish that those who were involved in this thread's fiery debate would join in the other - civilized - debate, or discussion rather. I look forward to seeing you there.

My e-mail is daharsh777@hotmail.com if anyone wishes to adress me privately.

Thumbs up Apologia Daharsh

That was a fairly gracious apology, Mr. McGonagall. I appreciate it when someone can admit that they're wrong, especially when they can do so with some style. Thank you.

The people who post on this board don't strike me as the type to hold grudges, and I'm sure that when they see your post, they'll be willing to try again. Let's hope they see it. J-J has, and others may as well.

Good luck on the new thread.

ps. You don't have to post your email address. You had to put it in your "profile" when you joined the board, and anyone who wants to contact you can simply go to your profile and click on "email daharsh"--as you can do by clicking on their profile if you want to find out about them or email them. Thanks for doing it, tho--very open of you.

Well said Oron. But Daharsh, do you have to write with such strangulated prose, as if every sentence is some kind of competition? Just a style point I guess. But anyway as Oron says - no grudges as long as your apology is sincere and you drop the superior act in future posts.

Your spelling, although still something of an issue, is coming along too btw
