Brookie is set in Liverpool in north west England. The same city which gave the world the Beatles.

Liverpool is strongly influenced by Irish immigrants who have crossed the Irish Sea over the past couple of centuries, which could account for the similarities with Scottish speech.

I think that RaymondS's post is a sign that the only UK accents that are heard outside the country belong to a geographically small area in the south-east corner of England. Maybe the BBC World Service could be persuaded to have a wider selection of accents.
