Dear friends,

Hi there, how are you all? I´m new here, so this is my posting. My Name is Jan-Olov, but please call me Jan I´m 32 and I´m a Swede and I´m moving to Scotland and Glasgow this December, and I´ll do my very best to make sure that it will for good. I would like to know how I best will learn Scottish and Gaelic while I´m in Scotland, is there any evening classes? All your help is very much appreciated.

Yours Sincerely,
Jan

Thumbs up Hi and Welcome

Hi, I am a student here, So my advice would be to check out the Websites for the Universities and Colleges in Glasgow. I know that this year Strathclyde is running a Gaelic class, so others may well be too! I know they run Summerschools and Nightschools - so whatever takes your fancy.

Strathclyde's Website is : http//:www.strath.ac.uk
Glasgow's Website is: http//:www.gla.ac.uk

I don't know Paisley or Glasgow Caledonian's, or the Colleges websites - but at least that is a start!

Alternatively maddog (on another thread somewhere) gave this address for a website:

Paws for thought

Hello, Jan-Olav and welcome to Scotland.com! Ceud mile failte. I am in Glasgow, and I know the local education authority often runs evening classes in Gaelic, but they do tend to start in August or September, so they may be of no use. My computer is going badly at present, so here is only one link that I hope might be interesting for you.

Learning Gaelic

Jan, I,too,am looking into how to learn Gaelic. Since I'm not in Scotland now, the first thing I did was go to Google, type in "Gaelic' and hit Google Search. I was amazed at the return. There are dozens of sites, schools, and bookstores that pop up right away. The place to start seems to me to be http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig. This is Sabhal Mor Ostaig, a college on the island of Skye, which is the centre for teaching of Scottish Gaelic. They have an e-mail discussion group for learners of Scottish Gailic - most of the members are not in Scotland. They also have a penpal listing that you can sign up for if you would like to have a Gaelic-speaking, (or learning), penpal. There are so many classes on every level. There were all kinds of other ways to learn listed on Google, depending on if you want to attend a class, learn by a book, or use tapes and videos. Thanks to whoever posted the information about the radio station. I can't wait.

HELLO JAN, MY NAME IS ANN AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT IT IS GREAT TO SEE U WANTING TO LEARN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. I JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT MOST PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND DONT USE GAELIC AS THERE FIRST LANGUAGE. IT'S MOSTLY UP IN THE HIGHLANDS THAT GAELIC IS SPOKEN. SO YOU REALLY DONT HAVE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT NOT SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE, BUT THAT DOESN'T ME I'M TRYING TO DISCOURAGE YOU FROM LEARNING. HOPE MY ADVICE CAME OFF AS USEFULL AND NOT RUDE. SINCERLY ANN
