West Lothian Question...

Neil,
the English have accepted a seperate Scottish parliament without an English one, over-representation in Westminster for Scots, several Scottish prime ministers (including the current one), Scottish leaders of opposition parties (Charles Kennedy of Inverness (Lib Dem), Iain Duncan Smith of Edinburgh (Conserv)), a Scottish chancellor (Gordon Brown of Glasgow) and other senior politicians such as Robin Cook. There have been heads of the church of England who were Scots. One could find many more Scots at senior levels in Englsh and British institutions. Racist films such as Braveheart are viewed in England and very little is said against it. We all heard about the monarchy's Scottish connections during the Queen Mother's death. Another concession to Scotland would probably not be met with too much disdain - especially as apathy and indiference to the monarchy is pretty high anyway! Let's wait until a Robert or a David or an Alexander reaches the throne and then the debate will be settled - whether it's common sense or not...

Do you actually believe that? Do you think the English would accept a Robert III, etc.? I don't.
Why not? What would you expect, rioting in the streets? I see no particular reason to expect it. Hopefully, however, we'll never need to find out, because the monarchy won't last that long. This would, however, involve ACTIVELY getting rid of the monarchy, either in Britain or seperately in an independent Scotland, rather than just pretending that it doesn't exist.
