gaelic is a language of the past nobody except people in the north use it any more and us in the south of Scotland have to suffer it on tv
the government spend thousands on it when it would be better used in schools and hospitals
ok its the language of Scotland but would it not be better to let it die peacefully instead of being dragged along through the 21st century

Ok hon..I see your point about the money they spend on it. but when Iwas in the highlands i heard the language allot. Some lowlanders speak it too. I would say that if the families want thier kids to learn it then they should have that options. But to force it on those that dont want it them i think that is wrong. So i do understand your point

The right to speak your own native language is a human right enshrined in United Nations legislation. Obviously no language is confined ti the past if it is used on a day-to-day basis in any area.
More money was spent eradicating Gaelic and Scots in favour of English. The amount spent on TV is marginal and not enough. You don't have to put up with it at all. The Gaels have to put up with a TV schedule 99.9% nothing to do with their culture. Full of pathetic middle class sitcoms from Middle England.
Is that what you prefer ?
Probably is, but if you looked at any linguistic reports, any of the human rights legislation, the struggle for language recognition, you would probably have kept your pathetic and ill-informed opinions to yourself Colin.
Waken up and open yer eyes, or at least have a point thats not based on your own bias unresearched misgivings !

'Gaelic is the language of Scotland?'.Like hell it is!I don't speak gaelic,I don't know anybody who speaks gaelic and my ancestors probably haven't spoken it for about 1000 years. It is the language of a small minority of Scots and I resent hearing it on TV every day.In fact Gaelic is complete anathema to me and only common courtesy prevents me from expressing my true feelings with greater'eloquence'.

I really am very sorry that Gaelic was absolutely abolished(being a Highlander myself) by the English Government, but do we need Gaelic nowadays? I don't think so, do the Safeway supermarkets in Inverness and Fort William write signs in Gaelic and English just to show off? And why do the Highland Council write signs like that? Showing off of course.. it seems that we are just trying to strangle all the novelty value out of the Gaelic language just to appeal to tourists.

I often visit Scotland and Wales. I have this feeling that the Welsh, more than the Scots, have an own identity because of their language. But I do love the Scottish accent !
