[quote=BonnieGC;419393]Hi, I was hoping I could find some folks who know the Gaelic language fairly well and could give me a hand with naming my son who's due in late May.

Congratulations on haveing a baby.

Although I am far from an expert in Gaelic/Celtic names I did a google search to find Barry in Celtic. Although my heritage goes back to Scotland, I found out my name is Irish Celtic. The spelling for Barry is Bearach.

Check out these two web-sites: baby-names.adoption.com/origin/gaelic.html;
thinkbabymanes.com.

Maybe these will help you.

Good luck!

Bearach

A little off topic and I apologise in advance for it. Forgive my ignorance but Polwarth referred to a language as "Scottish". When that was said was it meant to mean the version of English that is spoken in Scotland or a different language entirely?

There is great controversy about whether the Scots language(s) are really languages or merely dialects. I come down on the side of the former.

Do a google for Lallans, Doric and Auld Scots! The website Wir Ain Leid was always a good site to start

I've had a look and I'm going with that it is it's own language. I can't understand it so it's not English . It is easy to see where the debate comes from though.

I suspect you might be better to look for an Irish board where people know their own surname and forename history! Whilst we have many names in common, lots are particular to the specific country.
It is indeed, although in Scotland, the name would be "Fillan" perhaps, which is an anglicisation of Faolan. The name crops up in St Fillans, McLellan/Cleland (son of the servant of Faolan) etc

Yes, and the so called Scottish/Scots/Scotch language is nearly always Lallans... as if the other one didn't exist.

The Scottish National Dictionary is all Lallans. Almost no acknowledgement of Scotland's older living language.
