Frae - fae ?

When I was a boy and I used to read Oor Wullie and the Broons, they used to say "frae" for from.

But when I heard myself or others talking, we'd say "fae".

I came to the conclusion that frae was West Scotland and fae was East.

Is that the case ? What about North and South ?

I remember slogans daubed on walls in parts of Edinburgh and Musselburgh etc would say like Padge fi Niddrie., where fi = fae.

Any thoughts ?

Mostly fae in the Edinburgh area, and I always put the 'fi' grafitti down to illiteracy!

One of my grannies adored the Sunday post. Haven't noticed it for years, though!
