Laggierigh ?

Hi there,

I am looking for the location and the meaning/translation of a word found on one of my ancestors birth records from 1763. The word is "Laggierigh". It is in the Parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester in the county of Ross and Cromarty.

I have read on the LDS site that Laggie is the same as Loggie (part of the parish name).

So if anyone knows where or what Laggierigh is please let me know.

Cheers.

DG, the lag part, as in Laggan, means a wet place, righ=king. Lianachan's a placename buff, he'd maybe help.

Logie-Riach

Hi, I have just found that the village which is now called Conon Bridge in the same parish used to be called "Logie-Riach" I am pretty sure that Laggierigh is just a spelling variation of Logie-Riach.

The modern English name for Logie Easter is Marybank (a village a few miles west of Conon Bridge) and its Gaelic name is Lagaidh. (Dwelly's Illustrated Gaelic to English Dictionary).

"Logie is for Logaigh later Lagaigh, dative of logach, 'place of the hollow.'" (The History of The Placenames of Scotland by William J. Watson).

This, also from W.J. Watson, "The names of parishes are usually taken either from the name of the ancient parish church or from its site. Examples of the former are the numerous parish names in Kil-, such as Kilmuir, Kilmorack, Kilmonivaig; the second part here is the name of the saint commemorated in the dedication. From the name of the spot where the church was situated come such parish names as Logie, Contin, Resolis, Nigg, Daviot." (Scottish Place-name Papers).

In the same chapter (Place Names of Scotland - A Review) where he corrects Rev. J.B. Johnston's mistakes W.J. Watson explains: "He also overrates the extent to which final unaccented syllables are liable to corruption. Thus, Logie, Eathie, etc, have not arisen and could not arise from Lagan, Athan; final -an does not become -ie. Logie, Tully, Dornie, and a host of other names are survivals from the period when the locative of Gaelic words ending in -ach was in -aigh, as it still is in Irish. Thus, Logie is the old locative of Lagach, Place in the hollow, and so on; cf Cairnie, Dornie, Blairie, as against Carnoch, Dornoch, Blarich."

So I am probably right then that Laggierigh (in parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester) is actually modern day Conon Bridge.
