To Friends of the Highlands.
With three years of diligence and a sum from the Government, I have collected £550 to build a pier for the fishermen of Storr, Assynt But I still need £50 to complete the work. I appeal to our relatives in America for help, a sum small or large. I appeal particularly to those who left Assynt and know of the dangers our people face on the coast of Storr, Write to JOHN MACLEOD, M . A., Culkein Storr, Sutherlandshire. |

MagsHeb,
Nicely done. Welcome to Scotland.com. How refreshing to have another Gaelic translator on the forum. Are you a native Gaelic speaker from the Isles? G.J – To answer your questions:. Irrespective of rumours to the contrary, I come from Lewis, and that’s opposite Assynt, on the other side of the Minch. A crofter is the tenant of the croft and he or she pays rent to the Landowner. However large the family, there can only be one name on the tenancy. If one lives in the croft house but is not the one named on the tenancy agreement, or in a property built on land fued off the croft, then, strictly speaking, one is not a crofter, even if one does as much croft work as, or even more than, the person named. Such legal distinctions, however, are not always high- lighted when one talks of crofters in general day to day conversation. Like many other terms, it is used loosely to describe people living in crofting communities. |
