I'm sure we'll hear the screams coming from whatever part of the USA he's actually from!

[quote=Croi Sasanach;404032]... it is improbable that Gaelic 'originated' in modern day Scotland. QUOTE]
Who said that? Try reading more slowly. Those seeking enlightenment should read this book. Historic Scotland // Some crazy person keeps intruding! |

That crazy person would be the troll known as Hugh2 (the one that was probably once known as Raingeanach!)
![]() As for the book you think we all should read as it will enlighten us... did it ever occur to you that Ewan Campbell might just be wrong with his assumptions? Lets face it, there's not many historians out there rushing to change their beliefs based on his findings is there? However, it is likely that there were migrations both ways between Northern Ireland and the area now known as Argyll (especially Kintyre and Islay) as natives in each area would have been able to see other land across the water. Having said that, I have to agree with Croi that it is improbable that the Gaelic language didn't travel to Scotland from Ireland! Then again I don't expect the troll (Hugh2/Raingeanach) to change his opnion based on anything other than books that tell him what he wants to hear! Saints and Sea Kings appears to be one of those books... and the fact it (along with the other books in the Making of Scotland series) is geared towards younger readers means there won't be too many difficult words for him to have to read!

''The original Scots, the people who gave Scotland her very name (Scotti, in Latin and probably meaning `pirates`), were Gaelic speakers.'' I agree with all of this. But what constituted an invasion. What we do know is that a kyul or long boat would carry maybe 40-50 men. Probably only a dozen boats at the most would invade any other place. Plus many would not stay after the initial plunder. Alot does not add up. And much is mixed with Nationalistic myth. Which is OK and serves its purpose. But a few dozen Gaels subduing the fiersome Pictish tribes? Naaaa. So what? And what happened to the Caledonians and Hibernians? |

Picts were mentioned by Bede and others long into the 600's etc. Where you get the word Pictland from.
As for Alba. Albania? That has been mentioned in the past. Some have said that the very original people on this whole island looked like dark skinned Albanians. Only Nordic people would change this mix. |

I don't think Gaelic was ever spoken across Scotland. The Picts continued.
The only true pan Scottish language is OE. Continuing into modern English. Brythonic as a language? Who the f8k knows? Cornish and so on is just made up crap. Where is the truth of all of this? And please no one tell me that Gaels invaded on coracles - I will laugh. |
