A CLOSE friend once told me that the phrase "it's raining cats and dogs" originated in Scotland in the days when houses had thatched roofs made from hay. To keep warm, the animals would often stray up onto the roofs where the heat rose and when it started to rain, the animals would slip on the wet hay and slide down onto the ground below.
