I am an Aberdonian living in England and have been asked numerous times if I am Irish. Therefore from my point of view I understand the earlier postings in this thread.

I do on the otherhand often get asked when I am in France and speaking French if I am American.

I believe that the most well known Scottish accents are from the West Coast ie. Glasgow etc. and us Doric speakers accents are much more difficult to place.

the French

thequine, when I am in France and I speak English, I am asked whether I am from England ( I have no English accent! ) or from the Netherlands and when I speak French, I am asked if I am from Russia, Poland or Germany. :-)
( Actually, I'm from Slovakia. )
It means that the French have no sense for distinguising where people originally are from when they speak particular language :-)
