Question

I am looking for the meaning of the word KEMMEL. My g-grandfather was born in the KEMMELS OF DURNO,Aberdeenshire. I have been told that a kemmel was possibly a place where sheep were sheared. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you.

Shearing is clipping the wool off sheep. More of a job for a barber than a butcher!

I'm from Aberdeenshire, but I'm afraid I don't know the meaning of kemmels.

The Scots dictionary which I have does not contain the word kemmel. The nearest word to it is kemple which is a farming term for a measure of straw or hay.
