US senate invites MacAskill to speak in Senate.
'US senate invites MacAskill to speak in Senate.' No, actually, they're ordering Kenny MacAskill to bow and cower before them.
US senators expect our elected representative Kenny MacAskill to go over to the US and cower before the mighty US senate. I admire many things about the US (history, political set-up) but Kenny should tell them to go fùck themselves. We got drawn into their directionless war on terror and we've suffered enough over the last 10 years. As much as it was a politically naive thing to do releasing Magrahi (the SNP took a hit), it's disgraceful to see D Cam acting as the cowering gutless toady "junior partner" slagging off Scotland. US senators, corrupt and hypocritical, sold the US (the US I admire) down the tubes with the 'Patriot Act', they have yet to redeem themselves whilst they allow Afghanistan and Irak to bloodily drone on. Incidentally, the evidence against Magrahi was pathetic and he should not have been convicted on the lamentable CIA shreds of proof. A jury would not have convicted him in Scotland. US senate : go screw yourselves. I think that sums up my view. |

Good post, I don't believe the "politically naive" bit. It's what's known as justice. In Scotland we don't fry, gas or lethally inject prisoners, neither do we keep them on Death Row for twenty years, whilst we decide whether to fry, gas or inject them! We don't kidnap people on a global basis and lock them away for years without trial. Currently, we have a guy awaiting extradition to the US for hacking into the Pentagon computer! no reciprocal agreement exists whereby we can demand extradition of a US citizen (thanks to Blair). The practise in this country is to release prisoners who are terminally ill and are no threat. Some thirty-odd people have been so released in recent years. Megrahi is dying, nobody on earth can set a date for that death, had he remained in gaol he would, in all probability, be dead now. Miliband hypocritically called Megrahi's release wrong, yet is on record as saying that it would be bad for Britain if he died in a Scottish gaol. Cameron was all for the prisoner transfer agreement at the time yet condemns the release. Libya opening for business has seen a queue at Tripoly of US businessmen falling over themselves to sign contracts, gross hypocrisy again. These Senators should be careful what they ask for. The last time a Scottish politician was summoned to appear before them, i.e, George Galloway, he tore them up for arsepaper! wullie m

Nice post WM.
'naive', in the sense that it wasn't cynical enough. If he hadn't been released the SNP would not have suffered on the alter of public annoyance but he was and there it is. I still say the original conviction of Magrahi was pathetic. And I think MacAskill would tear them new rectums in unimaginable places but I would be disappointed if a Scottish parliament MSP went to the US to answer for his/her actions (of ANY political party). That said, D Cam seems to actually want to kiss the various recta of the US Senate. FROM Dictionary.com Anatomy – noun, plural -tums, -ta /-t?. the comparatively straight, terminal section of the intestine, ending in the anus. Origin: 1535–45; rectum ( intestinum ) the straight (intestine) The terminal portion of the large intestine, extending from the sigmoid colon to the anal canal. NOT MY WORDS BUT RELEVANT : "What a brass neck the USA has to have a go at our legal and justice system when they previously set free countless IRA bombers wanted in the UK for murdering innocent British men, women and children...". They should be told to piss off, in no uncertain fashion.
Now they say they will 'summon' bLIAR.... Yeah, right enough.... they'd need to be careful, he might actually tell the truth for a change. That'd cause heart attacks amongst the former White House 'allies' he toadied to so relentlessly. All this one-way traffic of 'summonses' and 'hearings' is a liberty.

Yet another example of gung-ho foreign imperialists with little or no knowledge of realpolitik trying to interfere in another state's affairs. I expect they'll try and invade to nick what's left of our oil next...
Perhaps Kenny should wander over and have a bit of fun asking them why they think Magrahi should have died (innocent) in jail when they gave medals to the crew of the USS Vincennes who blasted 290 men, women and children out of the sky over Iran? The hypocrisy of the US government never ceases to amaze me. They would keech their breeks if the real truth of this whole affair started to leak out...

The cynicism of politicians never ceases to amaze me. Obviously BP isn't flavour of the month in the US so how convenient that they should come up with a lot of vague innuendo and unproven accusations which just happen to link BP with an act of terrorism. It's quite calculated and deliberate - they don't want MacAskill's head on a plate and they don't give a stuff about Megrahi. They want to nail BP and they'll do it by fair means or foul.
