I'm coming to Scotland (from Sweden) for a month this spring and I'd like to read some Scottish history before going. So, anyone that have read a really good Scottish history book that you'd recommend?

I'm interested in the period from 800 AD and forward.

Any suggestions?

Sincerely
David

"The New Penguin History of Scotland" by R.A. Houston and W.W.J. Knox, one of the most recent Scottish history books (November 2001). Can't remember the ISBN but it is available from http://www.Amazon.co.uk at a slightly reduced price.

Hi,

I would recommend Fitzroy McLean's "Scotland - a concise history". It covers all, from the mists of early time to 1992, guess this should do for the beginning. It is a good book for students, as it is not very big and you can take it along on your way to the university and read it in the bus...

But careful - it makes you hungry for further reading, so you will end up hanging for hours in the internet or in some library to find out what McLean made you interested in. To me it's a good book, really.

Or maybe you should try to get one by Dr. Kenneth Gibson, not bad either...
