Hi Mamie - Here's a story about a Scottish pop group whose career was sort of ruined by archaological discoveries.

They were the Shaman,a psychedelic-techno dance group from the late eighties/early nineties.They based their whole philosophy/lyrics etc on the myths about the Mayan civilisation being one of great spiritual and ethical advancement.And who lived in harmony with nature and understood nature etc.They claimed that their rhythms were descended from the shamanic rhythms used by the Mayans to enter an advanced mental state.

And then all this stuff started to come out that revealed the Mayans as some of the most depraved and religiously insane societies in Earths history,with genital mutilation and human sacrifice among the highlights.Furthermore,it looks like they polluted themselves out of existence,hence their 'mysterious disappearance' from the world.

I guess the poor old Shaman were left looking a bit dumb ;they didn't really sell many more records after that.I reckon they probably just lost heart.Very bad timing though,to base your musical career on a romantic myth like that just before it gets busted!

They should have done a little research first. Shamanism is very widespread and while a little out there for me they could have used a mulitplicity of cultures to base themselves on.

And like a lot of Archeology findings whose to say what will come out in the next few years? Our ideas have changed every decade or so and is still subject to intrepetation.

eg who built Stonehenge? and what was it used for?

It was probably the first attempt by the English at building a wall to keep the Celts out. The shape reflects their insularity!

Did you hear about the Englishman with an inferiority complex?

Nah, the Angles were infesting northern Germany back then, but why spoil a good story?

The whole island was probably inhabited by Celts of various tribes when Stonehenge was built.

indeedy Em do but this thread is an older one!

Neil - so why say it was a story then. This would be the Celts(Sycthians) that came from the Eygyptian princess then? I believe they are the ancestors of half of Europe.
