The biggest events in Scottish history occured in the dark ages.In the ninth century AD the picts who had been the dominant power within Scotland suffered the near annihalation of their army at the hands of the Vikings in a battle near Dollar in central Scotland.Subsequently almost the entire Pictish nobility was treacherously murdered by the Scots of Dalriada. This created a fundamental shift in the balance of power and Gaelic celts under Kenneth Macalpin became the dominant power in Scotland at the expense of the Brythonic celts such as the Picts and the Britons of Strathclyde. Were it not for these events then this country would have remained under Pictish domination and our entire history would have been radically different.I believe that the Picts would have been unable to resist the incursions of Anglo-Saxon invaders with the level of success which the Scots achieved and consequently the lowlands of Scotland would have been annexed and absorbed into the English kingdom of Northumbria.
