Berwick upon Tweed?
Berwick upon Tweed is not currently in Scotland! It is a border city which sits at the mouth of the River Tweed on the border between Scotland and England. It was originally a major Scottish trading port but has been fought over many times and is currently in England. Indeed, its status was so much in doubt that it was often treated as a separate place. For example, when Britain went to war with Russia in the Crimea the declaration of war included England, Scotland AND Berwick, but the peace treaty missed out Berwick so, technically, Berwick is still at war with Russia!
To add to the confusion Berwickshire is in Scotland, just north of the border, Berwick Rangers Football Club plays in the Scottish League, and there is a North Berwick just east of Edinburgh. |

The town of Berwick has been English since King Richard III of England captured it in the 1470's. Hence it has been an English town since before Columbus discovered the Americas! Previous to that it had changed hands 13 times in the 150 or so years of the Anglo-Scottish wars.
The town's name can be traced back to its Viking heritage, but it was once part of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria which stretched from the firth of Forth in modern day Scotland to the river Humber in English Yorkshire between the seventh and ninth centuries. |
