Some of you might be interested in this version of the National Anthem which was written during 1746

God Save the King did not become the National Anthem until 1790 and the offending stanza was not included.

God save great George our King
Long live our noble King,
God save the King.
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the King.

O Lord our God arise,
Scatter his enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their popish tricks,
On him our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On him be pleased to pour,
Long may he reign.
May he defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice
God save the King.

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King.

The fourth stanza is the reason I will neither stand for nor sing that dogeral.

btw, I thought it was written in '45 and sung CONTINUOUSLY in some London theatre when the news came in that the Jacobites were at Derby?

Another non-stander or singer here, but I am suddenly amused by that little clause And ever give us cause - I wonder when, if ever, did they give any such cause. I suppose I ought to write to them and ask really. Hmmm

Sanny, how can you post the words of that drivel. Why do people want to stand and sing this I do not know? It is the worst I have heard, never mind the slur on the Scots it represents.

I agree with Neil & Celyn. I refuse to bow to the English oppression when this dirge appears.

No wonder we have been looking for independence for so long.

Ye may be right Neil, I thought it was '46.

To 'enlighten' some of the members and to shine some light on some history that is not widely known (or remembered).

I must say, as an outsider looking in, I am appalled at those lyrics. I have a comment about the people who wrote those lyrics, but I won't say it, because some of them visit this site, and I don't want to stereotype all of them.

I feel so badly for the Scots who have been tormented for so many centuries. Why can't we all just get along and love one another. (Too much to hope for, I know.)
