? about first mcduff in america

I am tring to find information on a Mcduff how came to america before the Revolutionary war. According to family storys I have herd there was a larg battle in scotland where he was captured and taken to england some how he escaped and got on a ship to America under the last name of duff. I know once in america he lived in the carolinas were he fought in the revolution beside Swamp Fox. some were between getting to america and his death he told his family thier name was mcduff instead of duff. I cant trace any further with out any proper info.
