MMM, William Wallace- i was wondering when he would appear. A great hero and a lot of Scots do take him for granted- and he was also misrepresented in Braveheart(Hollywoods fault)where was the bridge in the Battle of Stirling bridge.

Sorry to butt in again bobby, but this is what I intimated at when I suggested that there is, I suppose, a handful of Scottish 'heros' that Scots might automatically accept as being on any list of 'heros'.

Trouble is that there are so many more that the majority of Scots don't know about (I will spare you my usual tirade against the 'algofied' and 'sanitised' 'Scottish History' that is taught in schools, just for a change!).

But it can actually be difficult to find out about these 'unknown' heros - mainstream 'Scottish' histories tend to cut out whole series of events.

Now I will make no direct example of this, as I don't want to turn this into a political discussion - and also I am sure that the people I think are 'heros' are just the sort of people Unionists see as traitors!

(Funnily enough, William Wallace may be put in this category!)

Personally, I like to hear the names I've never heard of before - as this invariably uncovers another aspect of Scottish History that I don't know about!

A good excercise here would be to say (as a new topic) 'Who was your favourite Scottish King or Queen before 1300?', with special emphasis on obscurity! This might encourage members of the forum to look into a side of Scottish history they didn't know about...

I know, this all sounds a little 'hokey'...But really, I think going for the 'big names' has it's negative side. Very soon they represent all we know of Scottish history, and there is actually so much more to know than simply Bruce, Wallace, Rob Roy, Mary Queen of Scots, Charley and all the James...Honestly, there really is!!!
