The emphasis on rationalism, self improvement and education was fundamental to Calvinism so when Adam Smith proposed a system of free market economics he was promoting values that were already an integral feature of Scottish life. Robert Burns was writing poetry based on his experiences of everyday rural Scottish life. David Hume's secular philosophy could only have happened in a country like Scotland that allowed a degree of religious freedom in the eighteenth century - in some other countries he might have been imprisoned for promoting his anti-religious sentiments. The Scottish enlightenment didn't just occur by accident - a whole series of unique circumstances combined to bring about a revolution in Scottish culture and scientific innovation during the eighteenth century.
"Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men."

- Martin Luther King Jr.
