Scots living in England circa 1500-to present?

Hi everyone,
Do any Scottish people here know if Scots moved from Scotland and settled in parts of England, particularly around the time of James IV, or I?
I have an ancestor who shares the same surname as a Scottish clan (Gunn) but he is supposed to be English. However, The y-dna tests I have seen indicate otherwise. He appears to have Celtic haplogroup ancestors, in spite of what even the clann genealogists keep asserting. They say my ancestor had Danish Vikings for ancestors, but the tests indicate otherwise.
Thoughts on this, anyone? Did some Scots settle in England for a time?
I would greatly appreciate it if someone can help clear up this mystery!
