William 8th Earl of Douglas "black Douglas"
I have a ancestor a Robert Vaus esquired to said Earl. in latin in a land grant he calls him "dilecto armigero suo". this bieng mid 15th century Galloway Scottish culture does anyone know more about this phrase? Robert was a little older than his earl and the charter dates 1451 2-3 years after said douglas and his brother won the battle of Sark.

Yes notably armiger tends to denote a military sense, bieng that he was older, it must not have been a traditional squirehood, but in scotland esquire tended to denote a man-at-arms i believe, as a knight was a title granted by the king only in Scotland at this time, and james the II was still a boy more or less. besides the Douglases werent best friends with the crown at this time
. Bieng that this charter was 1451, 2-3 years after Sark, using military title, would it be safe to assume he fought there?
