MacLeod's Highlanders raised in 1770, of the 1100 men in the first batalion, only 840 were Highlanders, the rest came from elsewhere, incl' England & Ireland, possibly even Peter's Yorkshire! wullie.

Aye , thats right Wullie .
Our Grant Strathspey Fencible Regiment of 1793 was much the same .
Out of the 1,000 or so in the muster , about forty were from the Lowlands , three or four from England and and a couple from Ireland .
Apparently there were another 70-80 men on standby .

It may be that all or most were Grant connected men , no matter where they were born and raised , but the point still stands .
Not all Highland Regimental Soldiers were born and recruited in the highlands .


Just like today eh

and me, as you say, not knowing a single word of Gaelic, it felt appropriate to bring it up in passing.
