A Different Scottish History ?

If Scotland had always been a teetotal country, with no whisky industry and no imbibing locals, would the country’s history and current situation have been different ? Better or worse ?

Think of the effects on Scottish culture for a start !

Just a wee cup o’ coffee
Just a wee drap, that’s a’
Just a wee cup o’ coffee
Afore ye gang awa’
There’s a wee lassie waiting
In a wee but an’ ben,
But if ye can say “I’ll have a hot-half-decaf-caff”
Then you’re a’ right, ye ken !

I belong to Glasgow
Dear old Glasgow town,
But there’s something the matter wi’ Glasgow
For tea-bags they should be round,
I’m only a common old working chap
As anyone here can see,
But when I get a cup o’ Ceylon on a Saturday
Glasgow belongs to me !

Campbeltown Loch I wish ye were latté
Campbeltown Loch, och aye !
Oh Campbeltown Loch I wish ye were latté
Topped wi’ whipped cream, aye !

Now Campbeltown Loch is a beautiful place
But the prices of Starbucks are grim !
How nice it would be if the latté was free
And the Loch was filled up to the brim !

We'd have a gathering of the clans
They'd come from ben an’ but,
I can see them grin as they're wading in
And shouting “Mine’s toffee-nut !”

But what's this I view, ochone for you
It's a vision of horror for me !
It's the polis-marine wi’ a coffee machine
And they're dishing that crap oot for free !
No No No !

Campbeltown Loch I wish ye were latté
Campbeltown Loch, och aye !
Oh Campbeltown Loch I wish ye were latté
Topped wi’ whipped cream, aye !

A few of us the other day were talking about how differently the history of Scotland might have panned out had Andrew de Moray not died after the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

Very Good Lachie, you can, of course, get your daily charge of caffeine from a Buckfast bottle! wullie m.

That's a difficult one, and full of conjecture. I don't think it would have made any difference to the eventual outcome. There were just too many English armies. Perhaps de Moray could have held out for a time in the fastness of the Highland mountains but it could only have been a defensive action. In all probability he would eventually have been betrayed like Wallace.

The march of time. I wouldn't be surprised if the supermarket chains make their own versions ! Of course, M&S and Waitrose pack it in a biodegradable environmental broon paper bag !

Oh well, looks like Thunderbird or meths and milk !
