Jacobites fleeing to England after 1746
Would it have been out of the ordinary for a family to "move" to Lancashire, England after the Jacobite Uprising of 1746? I'm trying to make a connection from Wigan, Lancs to Scotland.
Thanks.

Ira, could be for religious reasons as the Episcopalians had to endure a period of proscription, something they were experts at imposing on others! Could it not just have been a case of joining the armed forces and settling where they had been posted or met a wummin?

Generally speaking Jacobite supporters who hadn't been actively involved in the rebellion weren't openly persecuted after 1745 but that's not to say that they might not have faced some discrimination from the authorities in Scotland - those who did actively support the Jacobite cause however often had their goods and lands confiscated so it wouldn't have been surprising that many Jacobites would want to move outwith Scotland where anti-Jacobite sentiment was less prevalent. Lancashire was one of the areas of England where Stewart support was widespread which is why Jacobite armies were there during both the 1715 and 1745 rebellions as they tried to encourage English Jacobites to join their cause.

The Manchester Regiment were left behind to hold Carlisle and suffered wholesale hangings when Cumberland took the place. Scottish Jacobites were mainly Episcopalians so had religious freedom in England. By the time the proscriptions were lifted many had became Presbyterians, Lancashire might have been an option if they were particularly relgious. What was the familys trade? the Industrial Revolution was starting and Scots moved south in large numbers for economic reasons, English tradesmen also moved north. Glassmaking, ironworkers & potters for example. A likelier reason for moving.

John Taylor had two sons (that I know of) John Jr and Charles. Charles was born 1771 in Hallgate and the only other record I have is in 1841 he lived in Wigan and was listed as a Coalminer.

Ira, the Jacobite thing is a bit of a red herring? and that these folk are probably from the Scottish Coalfields moving to Lancs. This is not unusual post 1760ish. Scottish farm managers & gardeners were also sought after in the south.
