Indeed the vast majority of the Manchester Regiment was left behind at Carlisle. However what you probably don't know is that a small detachment from the Manchester Regiment did indeed fight at Culloden. They manned the Jacobite artillery. This information comes from Tony Pollard's book: The History and Archaelogy of the last Clan Battle. Published 2009.

Again it was not the whole Manchester Regiment but just a detachment.

Okay but would you have any idea of what part of Scotland these coal miners would have come to Lancashire from? I'm having trouble finding an ancestor in England in 1745ish and I'm exploring the possibility that he may have been either a) a Jacobite supporter in Scotland who fled persecution or b) a miner who left for a better life in England.

Ira, I've sent you a PM, the Jacobite thing sounds unlikely. Colliers at that time, in Scotland, were the property of their masters and an absconder would be brought back, so a bit of difficulty there. The coalfields were mainly in Lanarkshire, the Lothians, Fife, Stirlingshire, Ayrshire & East Dumbartonshire.

Okay so it's looking less likely that he was a supporter because of after tracing the religion of his descendants, they were Anglicans.

Ira, Anglicans/Episcopalians are much the same thing. Scots moving to England at the Industrial Revolution would have to marry in the Church of England as only this was legal. Likewise English non-conformists, what makes you think that they came from Scotland at all?

Oh, I didn't know exactly what Episcopalians were sorrry. Anyway, it was something I read on the history of Wigan Lancs and how Prince Charlie stopped a few times on the way to and from Scotland in a place called Hallgate. Hallgate is where my oldest Taylor ancestor Charles Taylor was born in 1771 and his father was John Taylor who was born approx 1745-ish (place unknown). So I was hoping to find out that "Charles" Taylor was named after "Charles" Edward Stuart after his father John Taylor left Scotland.

I know it's a long shot but I was hoping for a connection.
